Administration: Institute for Culture and Ecology
Funding: USDA CSREES National Research Initiative

Project Overview
Small woodland owners can expand their income by harvesting and selling nontimber forest products (NTFPs), such as boughs, floral greens, and medicinal plants, a practice known as agroforestry or forest farming. This project will provide landowners with information about NTFP markets and will assist them in building the market networks required for long-term success. Major activities include developing a user-friendly on-line NTFP business directory and price-tracking system, providing training for landowners and extension agents in NTFP markets, and develop a peer-to-peer learning network that links woodland owners with each other and to retailers, wholesalers, and consumers. The anticipated benefits in the long term include greater economic stability in rural areas as strong regional networks of NTFP businesses develop and woodland owners diversify their incomes and forest ecosystems.
